On June 20, 2009, surfers globally will wax their boards, paddle out and catch waves in honor of International Surfing Day.
Founded five years ago by the Surfrider Foundation and Surfing Magazine, International Surfing Day unites surfers from around the world in celebration of the sport of surfing. As is tradition with the annual holiday, surfers will do their part to give back to our oceans, waves and beaches through various organized events such as clean-ups and restoration projects courtesy of the Surfrider Foundation.
In addition to over 100 coastal events taking place worldwide, various International Surfing Day sponsors will be hosting special “challenges,” that will allow the public to compete for prizes through various activities. In celebration of ISD’s 5th anniversary, there will be five on-site challenges: You Tube Challenge: Best ISD Influence Video, Most Unique Piece of Trash, Best Trash Sculpture, Costume Party: Best Costume While Riding a Wave, and Most Spots Surfed on ISD: Photo and/or Video Contest.
Although these riders will not be competing in any “challenge”, I will be paddling out and show Mother Ocean the love she deserves. To us at SurfLC, its not about being on the world tour or making a living in surfing. It’s about feeling the wave beneath you, the salt on your skin and showing respect for the power of nature. Get out there everyone. Happy International Surfing Day from Surf LC!

An exciting event for the awareness and recognition of big wave surfing and surfers, the Oceano hotel cannot wait to host the event. Featuring films by big wave surfers Greg Noll and legendary surf filmmaker Bruce Brown.
In addition to the movies, a gallery exhibiting photos and surfboards will be on displayfor the duration of the festival. Photos include some of the best, most memorable shots from Don Montgomery, Ed Grant, Frank Quirarte, Doug Acton, Seth Midgall, and others who have shot the breathtaking Maverick’s waves over the years.
The following night after the movies will be a tribute to the late Jay Moriarity who died in 2001. Moriarity was one of the best big wave surfers ever to ride Maverick’s and is dear to the surfing community’s heart.
