This weekend was a fantastic exhibition of surfing prowess and fantastic waves out in Huntington Beach, California as the icons and the newbies took on the US Open sponsored by Hurley. A combination of several surfing events for both the men and women, longboarders and even skaters, it was definitely an event at which to be seen.
In the end, local boy Brett Simpson squeaked out a win in the final minutes against Aussie Mick Fanning, winning the biggest purse for any surfing competition in the history of surfing – – $100,000. The huge money and the local winning was a great way to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Huntington Beach as a surf spot and the 50th anniversary of the first competitive surfing event at the pier.
The Junior Pro event was taken by Kai Barger from Hawaii and the women’s competition was taken by the 16-year-old Courtney Conologue. Read more below.
